VICTORIA XI - 1965

This picture was taken prior to a trip to take part in a tournament organised by the French Football Federation in Limoges, France from the 30th April to 2nd May 1965, where the team took on Barcelona, Borussia Munchengladbach, Hertha Berlin, St Etienne and Racing Brussels.

Standing: Dick Baxter (Trainer),  Gordon McVie, Moir Russell, Thomas Graham, Jack Taylor, Andy Jamieson, Robert Rennie, R. Hood, Bert Cromar (Secretary).

Front row: Robert Winning, Andrew Nisbet, Charles Merenghi, Paul Conn, Allan Andrews, Austin Reilly and Anthony Docherty.

Players marked in bold went on to play for the first eleven.

Queen's drew with Barcelona in the first match and the game went to penalties, after the shoot out was at 9-9 the officials called a halt to proceedings. Not sure how our youth teams would get on these days if they played their Barca equivalents!

Many thanks to Bernie McGovern for sending the picture and to Andy Jamieson for the information about the team and the tournament.
